Environment map: distant vs. local

Hi guys,

I am thinking about using environment maps for simulating a complex lighting environment. If I understood correctly, environment maps only models distant lights, whereas in the environment I would like to simulate, the lights are less than 1 meter from the illuminated object. What kind of artifacts is this going to generate?

Also, what do they mean by distant lights? What distance would that be in real life?

Thanks

Reinhard

the make an environmentmap u choose a place in your world and svae the view from 6 directions up/down/left etc so u have a cubemap

thus the view is only correct from this particular spot.

far away objects work cause they appear relatively stationary if u move eg look upward at the stars then walk 100meters down the road + lookup, the stars appear the same. but a nearby streetlight would have changes position dramtically from your viewpoint (anless it was a long way away)
