Metisse is an X-based window system designed for creating new types of desktop environments with innovative windows interactions. It is available under GPL for Mac OS X and Linuz and uses the OpenGL API to provide features unique among 3D environments (like interacting with transformed windows, UI duplications).  Metisse uses basic OpenGL API commands for most of its feature and can run on entry level 3D graphic cards. Metisse is being integrated into Mandriva Linux. To get a better feel for this, check out the example videos including the experimental OpenGL Shading Language example.
