At SIGGRAPH 2006, ATI Research, Inc. presented a paper titled, “A Performance-Oriented Data Parallel Virtual Machine for GPGPU Applications.” The system exposes GPU functionality at a low-level (including the fragment processors’ native instruction set), giving the programmer direct control over program compilation and loading, GPU memory management, and GPU/CPU synchronization. The virtual machine hides non-relevant graphics components and exposes the GPU as a data parallel processor array and memory controller, fed by a simple command processor. The exported components are specified sufficiently close to the actual hardware such that an application appears to be speaking directly to a device without intervention.
