GL_POINT_SPRITE_COORD_ORIGIN performance on current hardware

A long time ago (10+ years) certain GL_POINT_SPRITE_COORD_ORIGIN state caused performance issues, depending on what your render target was. Does anyone know if there is any difference between the two states now, or can they both be used freely without concern on AMD Nvidia and Intel hardware?
Thanks
