VERTICAL RETRACE

I use a double buffer and I would like to wait for the vertical retrace before swapping. I’ve got a Geforce 3D PROPHET and it’s said that I have to set the environment variable GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK to 1. Effectivly, it works but I would like to know if it is the only and above all the good method. Will it work with different 3D cards ?

That environment variable had no effect on my Matrox G450, so maybe it is an nvidia thing only.
