A standard model format?

I am trying to make a strategy game. “Trying” being the key word.

At the same time, I’m learning OpenGL. It has been dawning on me that I really need routines for reading in a standard model format, lest I want to write my own 3D modeler, which I don’t. Even better, I need some sort of animation system, which I believe is often part of the model format. Can anybody direct me someplace, or at least say how they do their modelling format?? Thanks!!

Lots of people use 3DStudio MAX’s .ase file format. You could also look into VRML97. For modellers, unless you want to spend $$ on 3DS MAX (the best), look up Blender and Milkshape3D via google.
