mouse XY values to move graphics

How do i use hardware like mouse XY values (without Z) to move some graphics in Opengl in 3D?

glTranslatef(x,y,0.0f) ?

to get the X or Y value of the mouse depends on what you are using im not sure how to do it with the WinAPI, but with SDL it is like this
int mousex;
int mousey;
SDL_GetMouseState(&mousex, &mousey);

I am not sure where to add in the part on moving the graphic using the mouse in the code. Can you help?

NEHE ArcBall Rotation

hello gurl18

a general tip : for beginning with opengl i would use glut instead of windows.h, because with glut it is much easier creating a simple window and implementing mouse and keyboard interactions.

I don’t know why nehe uses basically horrible windows code in it’s tutorials, because especially for beginners it’s not easy to understand and very circuitous if you only want learn opengl.
Fortunately glut code is available for most tutorials.

Sumpfratte

how to download glut?

you can grab GLUT here

http://www.xmission.com/~nate/glut.html

:slight_smile:

how do i download since there is no glut.dsw?

its not a vc++ workspace, its a lib/dll distribution. you can download the source, but i dont think thats what you want. just grab the glut-3.7.6-bin.zip file.

put glut.h into programs/microsoft visual studio/vc98/include/GL

put glut32.lib into programs/microsoft visual studio/vc98/lib

put glut32.dll into windows/system

include glut.h in your app and youre good to go.
