Linux OpenGL - Boxes "Hover" On Screen Until Mode Change

I recently installed the OpenGL drivers from nVidia without event. However, now when I log onto X (KDE and GNome are both afflicted), there is a box of green/brown color with a corrugated cardboard texture in it that hovers in the top left corner of my screen. If I log out of X, there’s a rather large box of green 3d-ish bars that sit on the left side of my screen. If I do something that causes a mode change, such as starting TuxRacer or zSNES in full-screen mode, the box in X goes away. I can not eliminate the box outside of X. Both boxes “hover” over everything else - i.e. windows, the desktop, text, etc. This is, needless to say, very annoying.

Here’s some systems info for yall who are interested:

RH 8.0
uname -r -> 2.4.18-14
Riva TNT2 M64 32M Card
4xAGP (OpenGL is still set to 2x)
XFree86 4.2.0

Driver/Kernel files were:
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.rh80up.i686.rpm
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.i386.rpm

I already attempted tweaks to the XFree86.conf-4 file which didn’t help.

Any tips?

Thanks,
Chris
