    Initial investigation suggests this is an OS bug. I'll follow up when I have more information.

    You wouldn't need to read back data from an FBO... the way to composite in OpenGL is to render the overlay to an FBO, bind the FBO color buffer as a texture, and render a blended quad into the target...
