    This is not an API and it depends on hardware.

    Do we have a single API to access all the current CPUs hardware? No. Why would it be different on GPUs?

    I did not say that GPUs are for graphics only, I totally agree with the idea of using them for general purpose, but not in openGL which is for me an API that should be used for computer graphics. But...

    Yes, but all examples you have taken are for graphic purpose, not very general.

    I think that opengl should always be an API for graphic purpose, if you want to do other things use CUDA or OpenCL,...

    Yes, it is a good solution, but I guess that it would work in shaders where array indexes depend on uniform or attribute variables or even on a texture lookup. I am sure that it would be possible to...

    I agree. One major problem I had with glsl is indexing arrays with variables. Just not being allowed to index arrays in a loop with a variable without unroll it is unusable. This could work on nvidia...
