    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

I don't even understand what most of those features mean. Am I just stupid? I don't know, I only wrote an engine with OpenGL, maybe I am not that smart.

    Conditional rendering is useless for...

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

Because I don't know the specifics of Larabee yet. It has some special hardware for texture caching and lookups, and I wouldn't be surprised if they did something similar for vertex buffers.

    But...

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

I don't have any interest in Intel's OpenGL and DX drivers. I don't see any point in that. I am interested in writing my own software rasterizer and having complete control of the renderer.

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

I am increasingly interested in Intel's Larabee technology, for the purpose of writing a software rasterizer. The vendors' failure to provide working drivers, and Khronos' failure to provide an...

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

ATI/AMD/The Ruby People/Those guys are pretty good about fixing driver bugs. I got something fixed just in the last couple weeks. You need to submit a demo showing the error and a complete report,...

Extensions are one thing, but nobody is going to move to an NVidia-only API.

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

I know NVidia knows they can't support OpenGL 3 without ATI's cooperations, but I sure would like to hear something from ATI as well on this.

Stable drivers and standard support for Shader Model 4...

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

Yes, we are all pissed, but what is the alternative? DX9? DX10? Both major APIs have made a huge fumble that would normally spell the death of one if the other wasn't screwing up at the same time....

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

Mark my words, when the GEForce 8800 GTS falls below $100 you will start to see a shift the way I am describing. It won't be long before gamers just expect to see unified soft shadows on everything,...

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

OpenGL 3 isn't about better graphics. It is about more reliable drivers, and thus simplifying PC gaming significantly.

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

You can talk about the market, sales, etc., but the fact is that consoles are always going to be locked into outdated technology. The current state of affairs is an artificial one created by...

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

I don't really play games. But I know that Crysis is the most graphically advanced game I have ever seen, by far. And according to Crytek the consoles don't have enough power to run the game at...

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

One of PC gaming's biggest problems is bad drivers. Do you think it is in Microsoft or Epic's best interests that PCs have reliable drivers, when they are so heavily invested in obsolete console...

It is true that a great many powerful companies are heavily invested in console technology right now, and have a motivation to not want PC graphics to advance. Look at the shitty engine Epic sells...

It doesn't matter what the reason behind the scenes is. The net effect is of the image I posted. Whether due to incompetence or maliciousness, it matters not to me.

    Neglect is passive malice.

This has all the markings of a cancelled project to me. I hope I am wrong, but hoping for OpenGL 3 feels delusional under these circumstances.

I can say with near certainty our company will be switching over to DirectX sometime in the next year due to the apparent cessation of OpenGL's progression. I like OpenGL, but it doesn't look right...

It's obvious this is held up by legal problems rather than technical. Everyone's lawyers have advised them not to say anything, so they are keeping silent. If it was a technical problem, they would...
