    Actually the features I use most are not in PIX - real time shader edit and continue support and pre-post-diff frame buffer support.

    That is because the "clamping of values" restriction was removed from hardware a long time ago.
    This allows you to perform a nice bloom when you tone map your guesses.

    What I meant was if you are letting the driver decide the compression, it would need lots more info to decide what format to use. Say you have an alpha channel that is only black or white, you could...

    That would be a fatal choice. That would mean you would have have to ship your app with all textures uncompressed and compress at load/install time.

    Do you have any idea how long it takes to do...
