OpenGL Does Not Have Window Frame

I’m running freeglut 2.4.0-6 on Ubuntu 8.04.1 (with Gnome), although I believe it’s still OpenGL running under everything. When I run 8 different example programs, none of them have the window frame (with title bar, close button, resizing edges, etc.) displayed. I know it’s there because I can resize and close, but the frame is invisible.

One of the examples is the example1.c contained in an article from '98. That and a couple other of the examples showed screen captures with window frames, so it has to be that something in my system isn’t linking up to display the frame.

Also, when I load any of the example programs, sometimes windows sitting behind will have their frames (with some padding) blank out the window displaying the OpenGL content. Minimizing and closing tend to leave the OpenGL contents still painted on the screen, until I move something around to repaint the area. If I maximize and then unmaximize, then the entire screen (aside from Ubuntu’s top and bottom bars) will keep the OpenGL contents painted, but with the smaller-sized OpenGL contents painted on top. And I can move the window (via grabbing the invisible title bar), but I have to minimize and restore the window via the taskbar to get it to redraw the OpenGL contents.

It would be nice to have the OpenGL contents stay within the window frame and respect window z-indexing (or whatever the X term is), as well as actually displaying the window frame.

What is your graphics card, did you install proprietary drivers etc. What does glxinfo report? Does the problem only exist with applications compiled by you, or do third-party gl applications also suffer from it (try something like tuxracer).

My graphics “card” is an integrated Intel Express 9xx (and OpenGL below seems to think it’s the 915GM). I didn’t need to install any drivers, although admittedly I don’t know that Ubuntu isn’t just using a generic driver.

I found PlanetPenguin Racer, which uses OpenGL. In windowed mode it does display the frame. However, when I moved the window it still displayed the contents from the old position until I ALT-TABed. So there are some issues as a whole (unless that’s usually the case with OpenGL), but the windowing must just be with things I’m compiling.

It’s hardly a fix, but it turns out that Xfce (which I think I prefer over Gnome) displays the window frames just fine, and all OpenGL content is kept properly within the window even if moved, minimized, or closed.

Well, it seems that this problem is not an OpenGL problem but a bug in Ubuntu/Gnome. I don’t think this board can help you…
