quake open gl on a notebook

I’m having a problem with quake gl when I start the game it starts out extremely slow and it keeps lagging.

I have vista basic and have ati radeon xpress 200m on my notebook

Try running http://www.delphi3d.net/hardware/index.php
and see if it says
Vendor = ATI Technologies
GL version should be 2.0

If it says something else, you need to update drivers. You can find on the website of the laptop maker.
