What is going to happen, since Micro$oft BOUGHT OpenGL!

I am really worried. http://www.itnews.com.au/story.cfm?ID=8904

Now what is going to happen for the future of
3D on Linux. GLX is from SGI.
Then we all know how much M$ hates, OpenSource.
It also hates GLU and all Linux stuff.
Yet, SGI used to be both Linux and OSS friend.

I am really affraid for the future of 3D.
Can someone calm my worries.
Please… Tell me M$ can’t scr8w Linux !

Regards
Ben

Microsoft is in control so if they really want to hurt OpenGL can they do so. This has been discussed in the advanced forum. It seems like they have bought patents for both software and hardware from SGI.

I also think that OpenGL on the Windows platform has been their property since many years. Check out http://www.sgi.com/software/opengl/license.html

Many companies has strong commercial interests in OpenGL. Other technologies that is trying to compete with Microsoft’s solutions is in a much worse position.
I also read some comments about this on slashdot. It seems like a popular belif by the people that thinks they know this stuff is that DirectX, they never say Direct3D, is better. I wonder if that means anything?

is there any perturbation on the OpenGL 2 ?
i don’t think.
OpenGL is open but not free !
Mesa may be there for a long time.

The worst thing that can happen: opengl mixes with directx !!!

hm, that wouldn’t be that bad. directx has many interesting features opengl does not (yet) have.
and yes, opengl is open, and it will keep so, cause many vendors have licensed it and keep developing it.
nevertheless, i think nvidia and others would fight against microsoft, since they wanted to be independent. imho, of course.

bye,
Tolga.

Perhaps will there be tools to convert shaders programs beetween different formats? NVidia already has a tool for converting DX8 shaders to OpenGL GF3 code.
SGI has also made an shader attempt with output for different hardware http://www.sgi.com/software/shader/
