Maybe a stupid question (I don’t know 3dmax so well), but does anyone know some plugin for 3dstudio for generating shadow-maps for a scene ?

Isn’t that built in? I don’t know a whole lot about 3dmax, but it maya it’s built in though.
MAX has built-in shadow mapping, but I suspect that dawn is actually referring to lightmaps instead. Apparently MAX 5 can do it: http://www.discreet.com/products/3dsmax/3dsmax_games.html
