Read *.dat files

Has anyone information on how to read *.dat files?

I think that *.dat files are application specific, and that everybody uses that extension to say that the file contains data that the application would use, usually for config or something like that. What’s in the file depends on the application, so it’s impossible to read a *.dat file without knowing what application it is from and the file structure that that program uses for it’s data.
