I've looked through the overview document and it just says that SGI maintains the extension registry. Who actually 'made' OpenGL?

opengl is based on irisgl ... which is created by sgi.

do I think that sgi created opengl? yes.

Way back in the mists of time, SGI wrote a graphics API called IRIS GL, for the purposes of rendering 3D graphics on their professional workstations.

In time it was recognised that a standard 3D API would be a good thing, and would ultimately benefit SGI - the API was based on the work already done on IRIS GL, and soon OpenGL was born. The Architechure Review Board (ARB) was formed to oversee development and to licence implementations.

SGI are the creators of OpenGL, and they still have a big influence on it today.
