3D Hardware "primer"

I know this doesn’t directly address OpenGL, but before I start tinkering with it, I need to get a little more information about how 3D rendering works in terms of the hardware. I have a general idea of what a Z-buffer, mip-mapping, bump mapping, etc. are, but I’d like to get a more complete knowledge of how all this technology works. I realize that new developments are changing the way things are done constantly (i.e. the Geforce 3), but surely there must be some place to start. I know that Tom’s Hardware will go into some of this detail every now and then, but I guess I’m looking for something a little more comprehensive and complete. Can anyone recommend some resources? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
