OpenGL 1.4 library on MS windows

Why has no one took over making openGL 1.4 libraries for Microsoft Windows?

Why is there no openSouce inititive to do this?

Does Microsoft have some hold over the windows version of the openGL library?

Yes, Microsoft is responsible for maintaining (cough) and updating (cough) opengl32.dll

This is why you have to load all post-1.1 features yourself at runtime.

History would make me ask, why would you think that M$ would ever support another company’s product beyond the time it takes for them to steal the technology to develop their own? They’re probably hoping that everyone will give up using OpenGL and switch to DirectX if we all get tired of having to use extensions, and then they can charge you extra for using or developing with DirectX. If it weren’t for open source, they’d probably charge us extra to use MS IE. They’ll probably start renting use of Windows OS (probably around 2012). Don’t pay, don’t play.

I guess I’ve become cynical of late…

Is there some agreement between Microsoft and SGI?

Could the openGL force MS, like the Sun people did on the Java support?
