i've sorta read the tutorial at nehe about bump mapping but that tells you how to do it
can give me a simpler explain of what bump mapping is?

the nehe tutorail aint proper bumpmapping i believe thats emboss bumpmapping,
bumpmapping is prolly one of the most discussed/explained topics in cg, try the nvidia website for a few pages (its not simple to understand so dont expect to straight away)

Not really hard to explane, in the simplist terms it is using a image to map out raised areas on you object(making a 2D texture 3D) in which a texture is applied to.
