i have the choice between using 3ds and obj
is one better than the other?

If we don't know what you need, how can we say which one is better for you? If all you need is a list of vertices, then I suppose OBJ is by far the easiest to read. But if you're looking for a complete file format, OBJ is not what you're after.

No single file format is the best in general. The best format for you is the format that gives you what you need, AND, most important, a file formet that you can read. I mean, how usefull is the ultimate file format if you don't know how to parse it?

You must give us more information about what you want/need.
