Can't start Doom3 due to openGL errors

Hi…
I recently installed Doom 3 but i can’t seem to run it in my system…
Before getting any menu or intro os some kind, it crashes to the desktop with the following error screen :

What can i do?

BTW, my specs are:
AMD 2100+
512MB DDR400
Hercules ATI 9500Pro 128MB
Hitachi 120GB+8MB ATA133 7200rpm
Asus A7V333
ATI Catalyst 4.9 (beta-doom3 fix)
(tried 4.4 and 4.7 too)
DirectX 9.0c
(tried 9.0b too)

Thanks

Hmm. To help you it would be good if you tell us what OS you have installed on your machine.

Sorry, forgot the OS…
I have Windows XP Pro SP1 (Portuguese)

Looks like something is forcing you into software rendering.

There can dozen of reasons why that happens rangeing from your desktop is set to 256 colors to some other program is using OpenGL exclusively.

qwerty77, can you name some of the reasons?

My desktop is @ 1280x1024 @ 32bits @ 85Hz
I don’t believe any other program is using OpenGL as i have tried closing every other program running in the background (anti-virus and so on…)

Hmmm there are a lot of reasons why OpenGL support can break:

-I know that for instance Matlab causes trouble when its installed.
-If the “hardware acceleration” slider under “Display settings->Advanced->Troubleshooting” isnt at max there maybe problems as well.
-Some program installed a false/old OpenGL32.dll
-The driver couldnt register because a (antivirus)program is blocking access to the registry
-There where problems with the driver installation due to insuffient user rights

Actually there are to many reasons OpenGL could break to name them but thrust OpenGL usally works right out of the box. I have installed countless systems and none had a single problem with OpenGL until somebody else laid their hands on them.

Beware of matlab.
Maybe try cleaning the Doom3 install.

What does report GLinfo ?

hey im having the same problem, not even activision had any answers, if u find out how to solve it lemme know, email me sniperfoxxx@hotmail.com if u wanna sort it out together or if u find out, cheers

ZbuffeR, i have no “matlab” installed so, no problem there…
I also used that “GLinfo” tool you linked above.
In the “extension lists” I get an empty “WGL Extensions” group… this is probably the cause of the problem cause most errors are “WGL” related …right?

What to do now? Re-install OpenGL drivers?
I think OpenGL drivers come bundled inside my “ATI Catalyst” drivers, am I wrong?
How can I install them?

(Note: i’ve tried catalyst 4.4, 4.7 and 4.9Beta… yesterday I downloaded the new 4.8 …gonna try them today!)

m8 i had this exact same problem, opened task manager and closed all programs appart from explorer and systray

Sorry I was not very precise : the thing to look at with glinfo is on the main page (driver info), the lines about :
Driver version
Vendor
Renderer
OpenGL version

If you get something like “Vendor: Microsoft Corporation” you probably did not installed your display drivers properly.
It should say “Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.”
All the ATI Catalyst range of drivers should work. Be sure to uninstall it, reboot, then reinstall it properly. You may need a driver cleaner, I have seen such things working well.

On the Glinfo website, you can see plenty of people with your card that are working well :

Here’s my complete GLinfo report:

Ok, here’s what i did last night:

  • installed the latest VIA drivers (4.53)
  • reboot
  • uninstalled ATI drivers and ATI Ctrl Panel via “Add/Remove Programs” interface
  • reboot in safe mode
  • cleaned any trace of ATI drivers using “Driver Cleaner” tool from guru3d.com
  • reboot
  • installed ATI drivers 4.8
  • reboot

result: same errors as b4… :frowning:

As long as GLinfo will report “Vendor Microsoft Corporation” instead of ati, it means the drivers are not installed properly.

Maybe try a ATI related forum or mail to ATI driver support ?

Ok…
I hate to say this but I’m just about to give up… Disk formating and clean installation keeps echoing in my mind…
Tried everything… ATI doesn’t have any new ideas, Activision doesn’t reply… Maybe it’s time for an installation party!
…everyone at this thread is invited!
