Low FPS in GL Games

Ok first thing
games like MOHAA and Tremulous “Quake3 engine"GL only”
FPS drops below 10 in moderate sized rooms
but what im worryed about is this it is that slow on specs like these:

Processor:2.13 Genuine Intel Celeron D
RAM:766 DDR 3200
Video Card:Nvidia GeForce 5200 FX “256MB”“AGP8x”
Current OS: Win XP

when running Linux i see a drop in performance also.
does anyone have an idea of whats wrong
if any more info is needed ask
“Yes i have the latest drivers”

The GeForce 5200 range are very slow cards.

You would do better with a Geforce4Ti.
Geforec 6600+ are also good.

You could also reduce the screen resolution when running these games.

Make sure you don’t have antialiasing or other options forced in you driver settings for OpenGL.

With the CPU and RAM you have it would be best to have something like GeForce 6600 or 6600GT. In case you would consider Radeon - I think GeForce 6 is a lot better than Radeon X - I believe most people will agree.

Would you recommend I change my card to the one i have in a drawer :GeForce FX 5500 “128MB” “AGP8x”

Also both cards are made by BFG

The FX 5500 is a better card, but still kinda slow. If I had to choose I would go the FX5500 tho.

Would the Radeon X300SE be a good choice “only one available at my supplier”

This is from some page I found. First value is the processing power (MP/s) and the second one is memory speed (GB/s):

Radeon X300SE: 1300 / 3.1
Radeon X700: 3200 / 10.9

GeForce 4Ti4200: 2000 / 8.0
GeForce FX5500: 1100 / 6.3
GeForce 6600LE: 1200 / 7.8
GeForce 6600: 2400 / 8.0
GeForce 6600GT: 4000 / 15.0
GeForce 6800: 3900 / 21.0

As you can see FX is slowest when comes to executing shaders, but X300SE has slow memory.
6600LE is a bit faster than FX5500, but has way better architecture than FX and better than X300.

Keep in mind that these numbers do not give final speed. There are architectural differences that give GeForce 6 some extra speed when executing shaders. And it’s Shader Model 3.0 GPU, so I think it should earn some etra points for that.

Thanks for all the help but i managed to find a pretty decent card:Radeon 9250

According to the site I mentioned before, Radeon 9250 is nearly equal in speed with GeForce FX 5200.

And one more thing - Radeon 9250 is DirectX 8.1 and Radeon 9500 / GeForce FX are DirectX 9.0, so switching from GeForce FX 5200 to Radeon 9250 seems to be a bad idea.

You should look for GeForce 6600 / Radeon X600 at least.
Radeon 9700 / 9800 is also good, but don’t take anything with ‘128bit’ in name.

I guess he wants to downgrade lol!
