Opengl with max/maya/animation:master under XP

I’m having problems running 3d apps (max 4, maya ple, animation:master 9, etc.) with opengl enabled under xp. Basically, when they start up, my tooltips start acting weird. They display the tooltip that should’ve been displayed previously, but in a box sized for the tooltip that should be displayed (whew). I’m fairly certain it’s an opengl problem, because that’s one thing all these apps have in common (and enabling direct3d instead seems to resolve the issue, although it causes some major slowdowns). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
