OpenGL Profiler for Mac OS X

Categories: Developers |

Aug 10, 2006

At the WWDC, Apple announced Xcode 3, which like Xcode 2.3, includes the OpenGL Profiler for Mac OS X. OpenGL Profiler monitors a running OpenGL application and collects a variety of data pertaining to the application’s use of the OpenGL library, such as function call frequency and performance overhead. It also has the ability to suspend an application and display the frozen state of the OpenGL machine, the frame buffer, and any loaded texture maps. In general, the OpenGL Profiler provides a window through which you can peer inside an application in its running state to observe its true interaction with OpenGL. This can provide significant benefits for both performance optimization and debugging purposes. gDEBugger offers similar features for Windows, and BuGLe for Linux.

Low-level interface for GPGPU applications on ATI GPUs (pdf)

Categories: Developers |

Aug 10, 2006

At SIGGRAPH 2006, ATI Research, Inc. presented a paper titled, “A Performance-Oriented Data Parallel Virtual Machine for GPGPU Applications.” The system exposes GPU functionality at a low-level (including the fragment processors’ native instruction set), giving the programmer direct control over program compilation and loading, GPU memory management, and GPU/CPU synchronization.  The virtual machine hides non-relevant graphics components and exposes the GPU as a data parallel processor array and memory controller, fed by a simple command processor. The exported components are specified sufficiently close to the actual hardware such that an application appears to be speaking directly to a device without intervention. If you are interested in obtaining the system for evaluation, please contact researcher [at ] ati.com.
