Some Linux distros have a policy against including any non-"free" software, which makes nVidia's drivers useless.
Which makes those distros effectively useless and of no consequence or importance to anyone wanting to run any OpenGL based software on Linux. I'm well aware of what his point was. When politics and ideology start to trump common sense and objective thinking, it is not good for anyone...

... well actually it might be great for FreeBSD!

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

Please remember that GNU/Linux has been created by a large extend by people that wanted _free_ software. While some users may see it just as an operating system competing for market share to many users and developers of GNU/Linux still value freedom to some degree.
I don't want non-free stuff in my kernel. I want vendors to release specifications like Intel does (and AMD claims to intend to do), so that there can be free drivers.

Since when did this turn into a discussion about Linux? I know we need a substitute, since there is no OpenGL related information whatsoever, but this discussion is slowly heading into a flame-war about free software, please stop that.

How about some healthy GL3 speculation?

Is there a chance with GL3 that we will see the ability for some kind of ability to load some kind of pre-compiled shader objects?

According to the last info from SIGGRAPH, any such functionality would come, if it does, with LP Reloaded.

Unless they decided to fold it into LP due to the delay.

At this point I'm tempted to say that folding LP Reloaded into GL3.0 would be a good idea.. however no knowing what the delay is makes it hard to judge these things...

I wonder if we'll hear anything before the end of feb?

We will get OpenGL 3.0 LP spec at GDC by Feb 18-20. I'm a 105% sure!

That is because the "clamping of values" restriction was removed from hardware a long time ago.
This allows you to perform a nice bloom when you tone map your guesses.

    No, we will get this:
"We are SOOO excited, the spec is coming along SOOO well, we will release further information in the next regular newsletter, explaining yet another small detail with a 10 line example! LP will be ready sometime, MtE following sometime later, improving it even further!"

    Honestly, i'm pissed off.
