    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

This thread has at least gotten a lot more interesting since Korval decided to post again.

Kronos could do to hear more rational negativity. The smartest thing they could do is respond to these concerns and frustrations. Yes, even above delivering the best GL3 ever. It's simple trust/respect.

I think the image was totally justified and restrained.
I wouldn't go that far. The image suggests malice when stupidity seems more appropriate. Don't forget Hanlon's Razor.

More than anything, the image speaks very strongly to the OpenGL community's absolute and total frustration with the ARB's seeming inability to get anything done. Whether it's my ideas, Knackered's, NeARAZ's, or whomever's, they seem pathologically incapable of executing anything.

I really want to hope that you are wrong Korval... but if you are right, then we need a real change.

One thing is sure, OpenGL as cross platform graphics api should not die, whatever it happens and must be updated and regularly by a competent company/group/whatever.

It doesn't matter what the reason behind the scenes is. The net effect is of the image I posted. Whether due to incompetence or maliciousness, it matters not to me.

    Neglect is passive malice.

I've been following this thread for a long time now...

It's a wild idea and I have nothing to back it up, so it's my personal assumption only... But could there be some IP issues in the next GL3 spec? Which may explain why the chronos group has remained silent for so long (no update for a year), because they were told to keep things quite until it gets legally solved with whichever company holds this patent claim, etc...

Yes we could, but what for?

I'm sure we will act as grown-ups as hell, once we get the spec. At Siggraph 2008...

Till then, the kindergarden level is acceptable (or even appropriate), I'd say.

IP issues? Now THAT'S a brand new idea for explaining the delay! How come no one else would have thought of this!?

"I've been following this thread for a long time now..."

    Really?!

knackered: I value your professional opinion about 3D graphics stuff, but i really don't care for your political views, please spare me those in the future.

    It matters.
I would like to know what is the problem or problems.

More importantly, is GL3 going to come? A simple yes or no would suffice.

    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

It's NOT Microsoft. It's annoying to keep hearing that one come up.

Anyway, if it were an IP issue that still wouldn't justify silence on the matter. They could have said "It's an IP issue that we need to resolve before more public information is released."

In my mind the only rationale for silence would be that somehow the new spec reveals some future capability that nvidia/amd don't want revealed yet. But even that is stupid because GL3 was supposed to simply replace GL2 as an API supporting current generation hardware (or in theory the same hardware as GL2).

Whatever we think up just doesn't make sense to keep silent about. It's stupid.
