    Re: OpenGL 3 Updates

I'm not up on the latest research in this area, but it seems to me an ultra-sophisticated execution environment could do realtime analysis of a process and create and distribute threads automatically across any number of processors, leaving the programmer to be the lazy oaf that he or she may be. That's my hope (borne out of a quasi stupor), but if it ever happens it'll probably be long after I'm dust in the wind.

C#/Java seem like obvious choices for the initial leg of that journey, not so much the languages themselves but the flexible VMs and JIT compilation capabilties that make them tick.

If you want an update on parallel processing, I'd recommend this video: Click!

    It's worth it!

    What about OpenMP / MPI?

The closest thing I've seen to a fully unified GPU/CPU framework was presented at Siggraph 2007 by RapidMind, but I wasn't there and I haven't followed up on it. It sounds like it's similar in spirit to frameworks like Sh and OpenMP, only it's able to do it all transparently. Pretty darn nifty if it lives up to its claims...

The *MP* stuff is great for CPU intensive loops where each iteration is independant from the others. Everything else is quite a nightmare to program with both efficiency and correctness.
The way Erlang does message passing is much more elegant for example, but it is quite a paradigm shift.

    RapidMind _is_ Sh (gone commercial).

I can say with near certainty our company will be switching over to DirectX sometime in the next year due to the apparent cessation of OpenGL's progression. I like OpenGL, but it doesn't look right now like it has much of a future, and XBox 360 development looks like something that would be good to expand into.

Before doing such a move I would advise you to ask your contacts at ATi and nVidia what's going on. You might just get the answer you seek.

Meaning you've sought an answer and got one? Do tell.
