problems with radeon 9500 pro on suse 9

i have downloaded and intalled the ati drivers on my system, but suse tells me i still have a radoen 8500 and no 3d acceleration is avalible. i get an error message that says acceleration is not avalible in multi-head environments. but in fglrxconfig i selected single head. i am also using gnome and am running out of ideas.
