GL Extensions crashing me. Why?

I've had to disable GL extensions to get Quake3 Arena to run on a K7 700mhz, 256 MB RAM, 18 GIG free with an ATI Rage Fury MAXX card on a Gigabyte mother board. Latest driver and GLSetup.

Any ideas?

I am having the exact same problems with my Rage Fury MAXX.

Anything having to do with OpenGL will hang with no warning. I cannot even get the problem to repeat -- it just happens randomly.

What is really killing me is that my old Monster 3D II 12MB PCI card runs Half-Life great.

System:
AMD K6/2-450
256 MB PC100 Ram
Win 98
FIC PA-2013 board with Via Apollo Chipset
