    frankly, i don't care a bit about all that stuff.

    i don't care if checking for configure events is better than using xgetwindowattributes. just because i haven't ever come across any problems...

    i dont see any difference between "you *may* get the same pointer" and "you *sometimes* get the same pointer"

    i didnt say anything about quality at all. i was saying that people seem to be *interested* about programming opengl with xlib.

    because you, personally, don't like xlib or don't use xlib?

    i would not say it is off-topic for this forum. this is the linux section, so any problem concerning linux and opengl can be posted here.

    brilliant thread.
    it has heroes and villains, it has drama, and it is about opengl.
    oh wait, now it seems to be about c and c++ too.
    and it is 2 years old now.
    i love it.

    i was trying to say that your graphics card will most probably not support a visual with 32 bit depth buffer.

    the "depth"-value you see when using xdpyinfo is not related to the opengl depth buffer.
    use glxinfo instead. personally, i have never seen a 32 bit depth buffer.
    even on a nvidia quadro 5000 the...

    tbh, i don't know turboc at all, but i suppose the graphics.h you mentioned serves for 2D graphics.

    in linux, there are loads of 2D graphics functions, check this page for details:...

    the output says you are building a 32 bit version ("Release Win32"). and since you cannot mix 32 and 64 bit, you need the 32 bit version of your lib.

    looks to me like a GL_POLYGON is internally drawn as a GL_TRIANGLE_FAN.
    if you switch to glPolygonMode(GL_FRONT_AND_BACK, GL_LINE), you should see that all triangles start at one single point.

    i cannot remember that i've ever seen a bitmap.h in /usr/include/GL under linux.
    did you copy the bitmap.h there manually from a windows installation?

    glm.h is the header file of the library. somewhere in your system, probably in /usr/lib, there has to be something like libglm.so or similar, which is the library itself.

    the only time i had performance problems related to textures was when i used one whose x-/y-size was not a power of 2 (e.g. 2,4,8,16,...).

    Re: Generating terrain

    i guess you can get rid of the extra lines by putting the glBegin/glEnd commands into the first loop:

    for(int x = 1; x < h; x++)
    {
    GL11.glBegin(GL11.GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP);
    for(int z = 1; z <...
