modeler: Blender
site: http://www.blender3d.org
manual: http://download.blender.org/documentation/htmlI/
The forum is rich with tutorials and other tips, and on the main site is a list of quite a few tutorials. Can export to other formats using python scripts which are mostly included or easily downloaded.
