I've been playing with textures now but I only have resources to use three image types (bmp, jpeg, and tga). jpeg and bmp images don't support transparent values and I don't have a program that can read or save tga images. can anybody post a link to a site where I can download a program or has a program that uses tif images or something?

You can use the GIMP to save and read TARGA. It's free. Google it.

The Gimp, an cross platform free open source replacement for Photoshop can handle these formats and a lot more :
