shadows

hi there
i was thinking about putting shadows in my programs. where should i start. are there any good examples/tutorials/web sites out there that anyone knows of?

NeHe (once again http://www.opengl.org/discussion_boards/ubb/smile.gif ), has a simple tutorial about stencil shadows. Quite good looking tutorial, yet I don't know is the speed of these shadows good enough.
