I HAVE THE EXACT SAME FRICKEN PROBLEM...

I KNOW HOW YOU MUST FEEL.

THE ONLY ADVICE I CAN SUGGEST IS TO INSTALL WIN98 AND PLAY IT FROM THERE AS IT WORKED PERFECTLY WITH ME THAT WAY BEFORE I GOT WIN2K.

NIEL

ps. STEliteForce is an AMAZING game!!!

The same happened to me but with the Quake 3 Arena Demo. Can't find a solution for this problem.

When I istalled Win2K, no OpenGL would work. A friend suggested I install the OPenGL libraries...even tho hey are supposedly included with win2k I said what the heck...and it WORKED...I was playing Q2, Q3, and Unreal Tourney in Open GL perfectly. Sadly, now the OPen GL has stopped working, and reinstalling video drivers and the GL libraries is no help. Any ideas?

I don't think this really applies to what is being discussed but I think one of you could help me. I have downloaded Quake3 demo onto a cd-rom transferred it to another computer and now I am trying to get opengl setup on the computer I transferred it to, but that computer only connects at 28000 baud so it would take forever to download the proper opengl driver for it. Question--if I know what 3d card I have (ati 3d rage pro) can I go to a web site and load that specific opengl driver onto a cd rom and then install that onto another computer (the only one I have access to that can run Quake3)
Please help--I am dying to play Quake3demo.
please email at pet20000@yahoo.com
thanks

not loud OpenGL Subsystem. If anyone can help
me please do, cause I do not know what to
do anymore.

I solved the problem with the Quake III engine where it says "could not load OpenGL subsystem".

I had the problem with the demo of Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2 running under win95 and using the 3D Prophet (GeForce 1).

First of all I installed the newest drivers from NVidia (detonator 3, version 6.31). This helped a little but did not yet start the game.
After that I followed the instructions in one of the posts down here:

Open the win.ini and search for the string "DVA" then set an smikolon in front of DVA and save the win.ini.

After that FAKK 2 started perfectly. I haven´t yet tried it with Star Trek Elite Force Demo or the Quake III Demo but I think it should work also with both of them.

Hope anyone else will be as successful as I was.

I have a sis 6326 pci card + 8meg - i searched high and low for a Opengl driver for it to run Quake 3 and here it is http://www.matsonic.com.tw/sis6326/win98/326win98.exe
dont forget you still need the opengl dll's in your windows/system drawer - you can get these from the opengl site

This is the exact error message that I got trying to open QIII on a win 2000 PIII 650 machine with an ATI Rage Fury Pro Card. I'm not sure what the win.ini file thing does as I cant find the specific line in it to change.
I have the very latest drivers that ATI offers, (believe it or not they already come on the win 2000 cd) so I dont know what else to try? Luckily my other pc has a geforce so I dont have probs like these but I would like to play QIII on win 2K ...any ideas?

I have the exact same problem as well. Game is American McGee's Alice. Video card is Creative Labs Annililator 2 (GeForce2)

I'm not sure but I think the problem is that the driver doesn't support full screen OpenGL.

Try this program at http://nehe.gamedev.net/projects/water/water.htm

It displays an option to run in full screen mode. I get an error message when I try. No problem running in window mode however.

For the NeHe demo, change your desktop color depth to 16 bit.

I don't know if that will fix the game stuff, though.

Thanks j,

That was exactly the problem (had color set to 32 bit). I would never have considering changing the color depth.

Fixed the Alice game too.

Has anybody other than Scarecrow2564 tried changing their color depth to 16-bit?

Sometimes the Windows init code for OpenGL can't switch color depths, so if you set your game to run in 16-bit color and your desktop to 32-bit, that might cause these problems.

Try changing your desktop color depth to 16-bit.

Hey everybody -

Seems like u have all had similar problems to me. Looks like the final word on the subject comes direct from Microsoft themselves, but I warn u, u may not like the news.

Search Microsoft On-Line Knowledge base for article Q247430

I wouldn't be suprised if all the graphics card drivers that don't work, are not compatible in the same sort of way as is specified in this article.

The article mentions that the drivers supplied by the graphics card manufacturers don't support the Open GL standard.

Exactly whether this is Microsoft's problem, or someone elses problem isn't clear, but its a bit of an oversight if you ask me!!!!

j
12-22-2000, 02:53 PM
That really shouldn't be a problem if you use the Detonator drivers from NVIDIA.

It sounds like Microsoft is saying that the drivers they included with the OS are faulty, so any other drivers should be fine.

Besides, people are having this problem with a whole bunch of different cards.

Like I said before, try changing the color depth on your screen.

Hi, I'm running an nVidia Tornado 32MB AGP on Win2k which was working fine on my old motherboard. I got a new motherboard and there seems to be a compatibility issue with OpenGL. I can run Direct3D and all other programs that are graphics intensive, but once I try to load OpenGL games, the system balks. Suggestions?

I have had that problem, cause my second monitor was acive. I deactivated the sec. Monitor and Q3 works perfect.

My problem was similar (W2K giving open GL grief in Q3...) but downloading the detonator patch for my TNT has done the trick (and it's increased the Q3 fr). I haven't got SP1 for W2K, and Q3 was only patched to 1.16 when I got it working, so it seems that graphics card manufacturers have taken the W2K OpenGL problems in to their own hands (certainly NVIDIA).

Thanks for the advice posted here...

Ok folks,

I had this problem in FAKK2 and in Alice But never in Q III or in Elite Force (btw i have a MatroxG400 DH with driver 6.21.003) What i did in FAKK2 is enabeling vertex lighting and composite vertex array(?) and the game started up correctly( before the environment/world textures didnt appear and were malformed). Alice ,in default mode, was totally gray/pale with all the textures/mappings disabled and no option to enable them in the game. I manually altered the config file(Base folder)with all the GL extensions on ("1") there are just a few possibilities but it turned out fine and now both games run ok, not perfect but playable. So if annyone knows how to change variables through the console,or how to tweak, please post them.

HEY BUD, THIS WORKED FOR ME. I HAVE A RIVA TNT AND ADDED THE ";" IN FRONT OF THE DVD IN MY WIN.INI FILE (FOUND IN YOUR WINDOWS DIRECTORY) AND SAVED. ALL MY GAMES WORK FINE NOW. YOU DONT KNOW HOW MANY PAGES AND SITES I'VE LOOKED AT AND IT IS AMAZING THAT THAT LITTLE ADDITION FIXES THE PROBLEM. and to think that OpenGL is STILL a beta product on a PC... hehe

I did what you all said, and have no problems.. as a matter of fact, I reqworked a few APPLE drivers.. and they work GREAT on a PC http://www.opengl.org/discussion_boards/ubb/smile.gif get a G4 with a Anihhilator 2 like i have... and a gigabyte network?.. it makes the PC patform look like an Atari5200... hehe

Enjoy trying to figure out PC-will-always-be-beta-ware stick you Direct3D where PC's should be.. you're trying to make a graphics environment on an ascii based system.. it's just TOO much patching!

That's great for Win95. any suggestions for Win2k? I don't have a DVA setting in my win.ini file. Thanks in advance!

If after trying the above solutions the game still does not work, check the following:

1. Go to Start > Run and in the run box type "Sysedit" without the quotes
and click the OK button.

2. When Sysedit comes up you should see a bunch of cascaded windows,
select the window that says Win.ini above it.

3. The Win.ini window should come to the foreground,
scroll through the list of items until you come to [DrawDib].

4. Look for a line under [DrawDib] that says DVA=0 and remove it.

5. Click File, then Save and close the Sysedit program.

6. Try the game at this point.

If you do not see the DVA=0 line under the [DrawDib] section,
then this is not the cause of your problem. DVA stands for Direct Video Access,
and is commonly set to 0 to fix issues with older games or video problems with old software.
Unfortunately it causes Quake 3 Arena to not recognize OpenGL
support on your system as well.

The only way to fix this is to remove that line.

This should not affect anything on your syste

Hey guys

I have three possible solutions to your probe:
1. the drivers for your graphic cards, get the latest ones
2. the DVA=0 line in the win.ini remove it and it should work
and the third, the one that might help:
look in your regedit for anything that says Quake 3 Arena. Isn't there any entry for it then get a patch for Quake 3 and install it. It places an entry in your registry. Now it should work, it did at least for me the first time. It might be the same probe for win2k users. Give it a try...

The DVA string modification is really for older computers and video cards. I'm not sure why anyone still mentions it.

Oh, and you really should state your exact problem and give your system information if you want help. I also recommend starting a new thread rather than burying it in another thread.

My card does not accept opengl games so I went to the site to download a driver. Also, make sure you have the latest version of direct X. The site I went to said the latest driver wouldn't work unless I had directx.8. I went to the microsoft site...they now have directx.9. I am in the process of downloading both. I will get back and let you know if it worked or not...LOL...keep your fingers crossed!!!!!

Okay everyone having problems with the openGL subsystem. I downloaded the driver and Directx.9. I can now play Alice. My advice to you is read all the info when going to download the drivers and directx. It was a simple but complicated process, had I not read the info, I would not be playing the game. Now, I am downloading a driver for the joystick....lol. My work is never done!!!:)
